Iran’s judiciary convened at a three-hour court hearing on January 4th to see further into this case. Richard Ratcliffe says this session was held without any of his wife’s family members, and she alone was in the court with her lawyer and a “large number of IRGC members from Tehran and Kerman”.
The Islamic Republic does not recognize dual citizenship for any individual and rarely allows foreign countries any counselate access to their nationals held in its prisons.
The Iranian regime resorts to arresting Iranians with dual citizenships as a method to bribe Western governments.

Middle East proxies’ ration of Iranian economy

There is a fundamental question about Iran’s economic status quo: More than one year after the lifting of international sanctions, why is the economy riddled with crises and even deteriorated in various regards?

In response to this question, Iranian affairs analysts cite various elements, including poor infrastructure, widespread corruption, political instability, numerous risks facing investments, and unfounded laws. But there are also factors created by the foreign policy choices of Iran’s theocratic government.

In this regard, one must undoubtedly take into consideration the heavy cost of Iran supporting terrorist proxy groups scattered across the Middle East. Iran’s fiscal budget bill (from March 2017 to March 2018) has allocated over 859 trillion rials (equal to $24.5 billion) for military and security affairs. This is 23 percent of the country’s general budget.

Iran’s election, and forbidden enthusiasm toward the West

With 24 remaining before Iran's presidential elections, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei prohibited Iran's six presidential candidates from looking outside Iran's borders for economic development, in a public speech on April 25, 2017.

But that was exactly what was being discussed in Iran's debates. None of the candidates are openly willing to turn toward the West. However, they expressed concern for the economic problems of the nation in a way that suggested engagement with the West would be inevitable.

Vice president Eshagh Jahangiri, one of the banned candidates, recently said: “Unemployment is a challenge cloud in Iran. The unemployment rate in some regions is up to 30 percent.” He added: “this rate for women sometimes is doubled.”

nated Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, former President of the clerical regime from running for presidency. This was done on the order of Khamenei, and in absolute weakness and desperation, Khamenei was forced to accept this surgery. This clearly indicates a sign of the end of the regime. Ahmadinejad, despite Khamenei’s opposition, declared his candidacy for presidency. This demonstrates unprecedented divisions among the regime’s factions and shows that Khamenei does not have influence and authority even among his own forces.

Trump's Syrian strike comes as a welcome change in America's tone toward Middle East

Developments in the wake of Syrian President Bashar Assad's April 4 chemical attack, and the United States’ subsequent missile attack, raise many questions. Why did Assad launch this chemical attack? Was he unaware of the probable consequences? Did he launch the attack without coordination with Tehran?

After the occupation of Aleppo, it was often asserted that Assad had cemented his position. Even the tone in the West changed. But over the past month, the Syrian opposition launched attacks inside Damascus, inflicting heavy blows to Assad’s forces even in Hama.
The military balance began changing and the Assad dictatorship, once again facing an existential crisis, resorted to inhumane measures and massacring innocent women and children.

Iran’s Presidential Election and a Slate of Crises

What political dilemma is the regime in Iran intending to resolve through this presidential election?
 A)  The ruling powers are now divided, and the separated components are placing crosshairs on each other, crippling or weakening their rivals. This is far beyond the factions loyal to Khamenei and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. We are also witnessing growing divides and disintegration among Khamenei loyalists

The fact that Iran’s presidential election is not a genuine vote springing from the people’s will, but a farce show resulting from a power struggle between ruling factions, has become crystal clear.
Currently, with hardline cleric Ebrahim Raisi, the incumbent President Hassan Rouhani and former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad entering the race, the scene of this rivalry has settled in to some great extent.
It’s quite obvious that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is behind Raisi’s candidacy in an attempted response to a number of challenges.
Iranian MP Hossein Ali Haji Doleigani said in an interview without mentioning Khamenei how the Supreme Leader asked Raisi to participate in the election.

Why did Khamenei place his weight behind Raisi?

Trump’s strike against Assad in Syria: The message for Iran

https://english.alarabiya.net/en/features/2017/04/11/Trump-s-strike-against-Assad-in-Syria-The-message-for-Iran.html
The United States military took decisive action early Thursday morning through launching a total of 59 precision guided Tomahawk cruise missiles targeting a Syrian airbase north of Damascus.
This site was believed to be used by Bashar Assad to carry out a horrific chemical weapons attack last Tuesday, leaving more than 500 killed and injured in Idlib Province of northwest Syria. Entire families were devastated, such as Abdulhamid al-Yussof, who lost 25 members of his family, including his wife and 9-month twin babies, Ahmed and Aya.
US President Donald Trump ordered the military strike, carried out by two US warships, the USS Porter and USS Ross, prior to his meeting with the visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping in Florida, possibly also sending a message also to North Korea about its nuclear ambitions.
More importantly, however, this strike, signaling a major shift in US policy, will be viewed as a strong message to Iran, being the main supporter of Assad regime throughout span of this atrocious six-year carnage against innocent civilians. And this turn of events couldn’t have arrived at a more critical timing, only weeks prior to Iran’s presidential election. Tehran will need to carefully evaluate the road ahead.
