Iran is deceiving the US — this is Trump's way forward

http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/foreign-policy/332152-iran-is-deceiving-the-us-this-is-trumps-way-forward

On Apr. 17, 2017, Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson described the Iran nuclear deal as a failure but said Tehran was complying with its terms. Tillerson stopped short of threatening to abandon the 2015 accord brokered by the major powers or saying if the Trump administration would penalize Iran with new sanctions on ballistic missiles or state-sponsored terrorism. Tillerson announced the National Security Council (NSC) would review the accord.

For Iran, being a state sponsor of international terrorism and proliferator of ballistic missiles since Jan. 1984 are two sides of the same coin. The State Department designated Iran as a State Sponsor of Terrorism in 1984; Iran continued its terrorist-related activity through 2014, including support for Palestinian terrorist groups in Gaza (Hamas), Lebanese Hezbollah, and various groups in Iraq and throughout the Middle East, which are a threat to allies like Israel and friends, such as Jordan and the Gulf States. Tehran also transferred short-and mid-range ballistic missiles to Hamas and Hezbollah.

ANALYSIS: Adopting a different approach on Iran

Signaling a major buzz topic in Washington these days, with the international community waiting anxiously, the new US administration is on the verge of implementing a significant Iran policy overhaul.

America nearly lost all of its influence in the Middle East as a result of a devastating engagement policy captained by the Obama-Kerry team, all in a desperate effort to obtain Tehran’s consent in completing the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The impact of the support by the Obama Administration of the Arab Spring did the rest, as main Arab allies came under immense pressure.

Iranian elections will weaken the hand of the regime Posted in: In Focus, Latest News, Iran Posted: 18:26 PM, May 06,2017 by The Oslo Times News Serial Number : TOT 6851 146259680577.jpg By Rob Roberts Iranian elections will weaken the hand of the regime Screen shot image: Shahin Gobadi (centre), member of NCRI Foreign Affairs Committee with guest panelists at the NCRI Press Conference on Prospects and Consequences of the Iranian elections. Italian Ex-Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi (R) and NCRI Foreign Affairs chairman Mohammad Mohaddessin (L). If an Iranian uprising were to spark this time, ahead of the May 19th Iranian elections, the legitimacy of the Mullahs’ regime would be too weak to stall it. This message was delivered as a stark warning hitting at the heart of a debate at the NCRI (National Council of Resistance of Iran) webcast press conference on Thursday. Chaired by Shahin Gobadi, a member of NCRI Foreign Affairs Committee, and entitled Prospects and Implications of the upcoming Iran Elections, Gobaldi along with guest panelists Ex-Foreign Minister (FM) of Italy Giulio Terzi, who is an outspoken critic on Europe’s role in appeasing the brutal Iranian regime, and representing the NCRI was Mohammad Mohaddessin, chair of its Foreign Affairs Committee. Fragility of the Iranian regime Discussing the Nuclear Deal (JCPOA) during the conference, the guest commentators agreed that although the deal remains flawed, it will effectively undermine the perceived autonomy of whichever Presidential candidate gets elected, in a campaign cycle that once again comes under fire and is being dubbed a sham. Originally pitched as a deal to lift trade sanctions in return for Iran’s winding-down of its uranium enrichment program, the deal could in fact be the playing card that defines the hand of the incumbent President leading to the unraveling of the regime’s powerbase. Mohaddessin unpicked the complex process for selecting candidates by which the Guardian Council stipulates that all political parties and people putting themselves forward for the electoral race must not violate Islamic principles. But in reality the vetting is nothing more than a psychological exercise of allegiance to the Supreme Leader Khamenei. In practice, it ignores the democratic parts of the Iranian constitution, while playing up to its theocratic elements. Election engineering and power play So, with just two Presidential camps in the running and each given the approval of Khamenei, the current President Rouhani’s hand lies in his ability to call a bluff, given that in European circles he’s blindly perceived as moderate, yet combines brutality and deception in his domestic policies. Which is in contrast to the ace up the sleeve that the conservative hardliner and protectionist candidate Ebrahim Raisi could deal, effectively wiping the Nuclear Deal dossier off the table – doing the Supreme Leader’s dirty work. Either result though comes during a period when the regime is facing an unprecedented time of weakness. The NCRI’s Mohaddessin lamented the redundant choice of the candidates’ mandates to make a difference saying “whoever comes into power can’t enact reform even if [they] wanted to.” Stimulating regime change Both speakers thought that if Khamenei fails to make Raisi president, even though having a smaller base, there will be defections from within the regime over the division of power; however, this will translate into no real change in the main policies of the regime, including domestic suppression and exportation of fundamentalism in the region. Ambassador Terzi didn’t hold back criticism, and nudged the conversation to Europe, saying that the EU leaders have a chance to recover footing in regards to holding the Iranian regime accountable. Terzi also mentioned that whilst there are always strong declarations by EU leaders to criticize the actions of heads of state in Turkey, Syria and Russia, on Iran the tone remains low, which he calls the Iranian Exception. Political freedoms and uprising May 6, Tehran:It was agreed that the West should step up and stop turning a blind eye to end the regime’s ongoing gross violations of human rights, and that the press needs to work on telling things as they are. Consensus was reached that the influence of young people is increasing in Iran and so they do have the power to bring about change. During election periods, the autocratic Mullahs’ regime goes as far as promoting the use of social media, including platforms like Telegram, Instagram and Facebook by candidates and their supporters. This is a level of tolerance that doesn’t filter outside of election cycles. The regime systematically imprisons users of social media under the auspices of national security, and continues to fuel sectarian and ethnic tensions. Ambassador Terzi’s take-away from all this is that the May 19th Iran election will inevitably make the regime weaker, saying it has reached a tipping point. Iran's Rouhani exploits a coal mine explosion for electioneering, gets pelted

http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2017/05/irans_rouhani_exploits_a_coal_mine_explosion_for_electioneering_gets_pelted.html

A major coal mine explosion struck northern Iran last Thursday, killing at least 35 miners and injuring at least 25 others, all of whom were hospitalized over inhaling the gas during rescue efforts after the blast. The blast occurred in the Zemestanyurt mine, about 14 kilometers outside the town of Azadshahr.
“Financial problems resulted in the lack of safety precautions in the coal mine. The workers themselves are reduced to negotiating for their own demands,” said Ramezan Bahrami, head of the regime’s Mining & Industry House in Golestan Province, in an interview with the Tasnim news agency, which is affiliated with Iran's Revolutionary Guards Quds Force. (IRGC). Lacks of safety standards and inadequate emergency services in mining areas contributed to these high fatalities.

Appeal denied for Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe

Ian’s judiciary has turned down a request for Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, according to her husband Richard Ratcliffe. A large number of Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) members were present in the court hearings of her case, he added.
Iran’s IRGC arrested Zaghari-Ratcliffe back in June 2016 at Tehran’s Khomeini International Airport as she intended to leave the country, and thus transferred to an unknown location in Kerman Province, southcentral Iran. Zaghari-Ratcliffe was consequently sentenced to five years behind bars in a court chaired by Judge Abolghasem Salavati.

Iran’s judiciary convened at a three-hour court hearing on January 4th to see further into this case. Richard Ratcliffe says this session was held without any of his wife’s family members, and she alone was in the court with her lawyer and a “large number of IRGC members from Tehran and Kerman”.
The Islamic Republic does not recognize dual citizenship for any individual and rarely allows foreign countries any counselate access to their nationals held in its prisons.
The Iranian regime resorts to arresting Iranians with dual citizenships as a method to bribe Western governments.
The IRGC accused Zaghari-Ratcliffe to “participating” in “projects seeking to overthrow” the regime. Richard Ratcliffe, however, says his wife’s arrest goes far beyond her activities and is connected to relations between London and Tehran. Iran is demanding the

Middle East proxies’ ration of Iranian economy

There is a fundamental question about Iran’s economic status quo: More than one year after the lifting of international sanctions, why is the economy riddled with crises and even deteriorated in various regards?

In response to this question, Iranian affairs analysts cite various elements, including poor infrastructure, widespread corruption, political instability, numerous risks facing investments, and unfounded laws. But there are also factors created by the foreign policy choices of Iran’s theocratic government.

In this regard, one must undoubtedly take into consideration the heavy cost of Iran supporting terrorist proxy groups scattered across the Middle East. Iran’s fiscal budget bill (from March 2017 to March 2018) has allocated over 859 trillion rials (equal to $24.5 billion) for military and security affairs. This is 23 percent of the country’s general budget.

Iran’s election, and forbidden enthusiasm toward the West

With 24 remaining before Iran's presidential elections, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei prohibited Iran's six presidential candidates from looking outside Iran's borders for economic development, in a public speech on April 25, 2017.

But that was exactly what was being discussed in Iran's debates. None of the candidates are openly willing to turn toward the West. However, they expressed concern for the economic problems of the nation in a way that suggested engagement with the West would be inevitable.

Vice president Eshagh Jahangiri, one of the banned candidates, recently said: “Unemployment is a challenge cloud in Iran. The unemployment rate in some regions is up to 30 percent.” He added: “this rate for women sometimes is doubled.”

NCRI - Senior mullah calls for exclusion of non-Muslim candidates from the municipality elections
The clerical regime’s Guardian Council elimi
nated Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, former President of the clerical regime from running for presidency. This was done on the order of Khamenei, and in absolute weakness and desperation, Khamenei was forced to accept this surgery. This clearly indicates a sign of the end of the regime. Ahmadinejad, despite Khamenei’s opposition, declared his candidacy for presidency. This demonstrates unprecedented divisions among the regime’s factions and shows that Khamenei does not have influence and authority even among his own forces.

Trump's Syrian strike comes as a welcome change in America's tone toward Middle East

Developments in the wake of Syrian President Bashar Assad's April 4 chemical attack, and the United States’ subsequent missile attack, raise many questions. Why did Assad launch this chemical attack? Was he unaware of the probable consequences? Did he launch the attack without coordination with Tehran?

After the occupation of Aleppo, it was often asserted that Assad had cemented his position. Even the tone in the West changed. But over the past month, the Syrian opposition launched attacks inside Damascus, inflicting heavy blows to Assad’s forces even in Hama.
The military balance began changing and the Assad dictatorship, once again facing an existential crisis, resorted to inhumane measures and massacring innocent women and children.

Iran’s Presidential Election and a Slate of Crises

What political dilemma is the regime in Iran intending to resolve through this presidential election?
 A)  The ruling powers are now divided, and the separated components are placing crosshairs on each other, crippling or weakening their rivals. This is far beyond the factions loyal to Khamenei and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. We are also witnessing growing divides and disintegration among Khamenei loyalists

The fact that Iran’s presidential election is not a genuine vote springing from the people’s will, but a farce show resulting from a power struggle between ruling factions, has become crystal clear.
Currently, with hardline cleric Ebrahim Raisi, the incumbent President Hassan Rouhani and former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad entering the race, the scene of this rivalry has settled in to some great extent.
It’s quite obvious that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is behind Raisi’s candidacy in an attempted response to a number of challenges.
Iranian MP Hossein Ali Haji Doleigani said in an interview without mentioning Khamenei how the Supreme Leader asked Raisi to participate in the election.

Why did Khamenei place his weight behind Raisi?
